Love at First Sight
Located in the heart of George Town, Penang, the Hotel Penaga is made up of 15 pre war terraces and shop houses and retains its original character inside and out, whilst offering all the expected luxury service and appearance of a heritage boutique hotel. The hotel is perfectly located for couples to romantically roam through the lorongs of Penang, which are the back lanes of the area, and the hotel itself hides a secret and verdant garden that was formerly a three metre access lane that has now been transformed into one of the hotel’s best features. After sightseeing and shopping, couples can aloso treat themselves to a well deserved relaxing treatment in the Penaga Spa, which has been inspired by the healing qualities of the indigenous plants of the Malaya Peninsula such as the penaga tree which contributes to the spa’s overall holistic approach, in one of the three double treatment rooms.
Your Stay
The rooms at the Hotel Penaga benefit from a traditional and aesthetically pleasing Malaysian feel with dark wood ornately carved and tones of burnt orange for the soft furnishings. Expect individual antique furniture and unique chairs from China, contemporary art pieces and historic maps of the local area. Each bathroom in the hotel has a Jacuzzi spa bath tub as well as a separate shower. The Hutton Rooms have balconies and restored timber floors while the Suites have balconies, sitting rooms and views overlooking Penang Hill. The Clarke Terrace house has a back garden perfect for al fresco dining along with two bedrooms and bathrooms decorated in the old Penang style. All rooms have Wi-Fi, air con, cable TV, espresso machine and a complimentary mini bar.
What to Do
Just five minutes walk from the hotel are many heritage walks, such as the Cheong Fatt Tze, the Blue Mansions which have been lovingly restored, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel is a perfect stop for a drink overlooking the sea, while the Protestant Graveyard is the final resting place for many European settlers. There is also plenty of shopping to be done around the area of the hotel, from 1st Avenue home to one of the biggest malls in the north to Mydin’s department store which is an ideal stop off for souvenirs and everything else imaginable. Take a dip back in the hotel’s swimming pool, which can be used for both swimming and cooling off and look out through the glass wall into the garden a night time for a special view over the area.
The Food of Love
The Cinnamon restaurant overlooks the swimming pool and is the place for causal dining, which reflects the street food outside. Staff here will help you select the perfectly matched dish to go hand in hand with a few glasses of well chosen wine. The Tanglung Bar represents the best of George Towns cultural mix of cuisine, and with its pretty glass lanterns, it is a great place for a quick night cap at the end of the night. There is also the option for private dining, which is perfect for an especially romantic evening from an anniversary to an engagement.
